Fanning the Flame: Avoiding Burnout and Discouragement

Seminar 4
Fanning the Flame: Fueling An Undying Passion for Christ and His Church
What happens when those who once welcomed you so graciously into the pastorate have turned on you because you are not moving the ministry in the direction the prefer? What do you do when they threaten you, withhold funds, and grow complacent? There is a great weight to carry, not only to watch over men’s souls, but also the discouragement of ministry.
How do you keep fanning the flame of passion for Christ to avoid burnout and depression?
Introduction:
Why are some foundational truths  that we need to embrace as we attempt to faithfully serve the Lord?
1)       God calls us first and foremost to be sincere slaves of His Son (Mark 12:29-31; Proverbs 1:7). We must be aware of professionalism in our ministries (being successful and productive in ministry, yet neglecting our hearts). You might become proficient at ministry at the expense of intimacy with Christ – soon, your ministry responsibilities become your God.
2)       Live a disciplined life of integrity based on the Word of God (Psalm 15:1-2; 55:22; Proverbs 2:7; 10:9; 2 Timothy 1:3). Success is not based on results. Success is based on obedience.
3)       Always keep in mind that we are under-shepherds of the Chief Shepherd Jesus Christ. It’s kingdom work and His Church (I Peter 5:1-4). The foundational prerequisite to avoiding burnout is to really believe that it is God’s Church and He will build it no matter what. We must trust in God’s sovereignty in everything we do.
God’s divine decrees – God’s eternal purpose according to the council of His will whereby for His own glory, He has decreed everything that happens (Isaiah 46:9-10; Ephesians 1:10-11).
Providence: God’s continuous operation of all things according to His will and for His own glory and the good of believers (Romans 8:28-29).
I Timothy 4:14-16
1)       Pay close attention to yourself.
2)       Pay close attention to your doctrine.
Points of Application
Proverbs 4:18 – “But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, that shines brighter and brighter until the full day.”
I Corinthians 15:58 – “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, so that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.”
